Caring for Your Generator Set

Caring for Your Generator Set

A generator set, also known as genset is made of a combination of an electrical generator and an engine mounted together to form a single piece of equipment that produces electrical power. For some facilities such as the hospital and military base, generator is a must. When a power grid fails, the generator come in as a backup power to support the operation in order to reduce the amount of downtime of the facilities. A generator can easily serve you for more than a decade. But, if there is no proper care and maintenance, it can also break in no time at all. Getting a new set definitely does not come cheap.

Therefore, it is crucial for the industry to have a good maintenance schedule. In this article, we will be sharing 5 easy tips for a generator maintenance.

1. Regular Oil Change

A generator is a rather busy machine as it runs 24/7 through oil and oil filters rather quickly. Therefore, never expect the filters that come with the generator to last long. It is recommended to change your oil filters for every 50+ hours of operation depending on the models. It is always best to consult your generator manual and supplier on the intervals beforehand.

2. Never Fuel Directly

People love the easy way; feeding the fuels directly into a running generator. Not only it is dangerous, but it also likely to cause damage to the highly-prized equipment. Make it a habit to turn off the generator before topping up its fuel and also allow a cool down period. Remember to handle with extreme care when you are dealing with a petrol powered generator.

3. Running Out of Fuel is a Big No

Whenever a generator runs out of fuel, naturally it stops generating electricity. But, the devices taking power from it will continue to withdraw magnetism right out of its coils causing it to become demagnetized over time. You may end up with a big repair bill or even risking losing a generator!

4. Make It Works Often

None of the mechanical equipment like standing around and not working. Dust, dead insects and spider webs can gunk up its parts. Even if you do not use it often, it is always good to let it run at least 30minutes or more every few months to ensure that it is working well.

5. Get Your Maintenance Done

Cleaning the air filter is recommended monthly or weekly depending on the size and workload of your generator. Meanwhile the replacement of oil filters need to happen every few months. What you absolutely should not miss is the maintenance of the generator. Plan at least a maintenance session every 6 months as a badly treated generator may fail catastrophically.
