If fire & smoke alarm panel are installed in the building, people could be notified if there is presence of smoke & fire, hence giving public sufficient time to evacuate the building if a fire breaks out.
To Have the Fire Extinguishers Ready
Installing the fire extinguishers and familiarizing yourself with it can really help during emergency. You can easily put down a fire with a fire extinguisher before they become huge. Basically, there are 5 main types of fire extinguisher:
- Water (Red Stripe): Suitable for fire causes by ordinary combustibles, such as wood, paper, cardboard and cloth as well as solid plastic.
- Foam (Yellow Stripe): Suitable for fire causes by ordinary combustibles and flammable liquids like gasoline, kerosene and diesel fuel.
- CO2 (Black Stripe): Appropriate for fire causes by flammable liquids & electrical equipment. Must not be used in confined spaces as CO2 displaces the available oxygen.
- Dry Powder (Light Blue Stripe): Able to combat fire causes by ordinary combustibles, flammable liquids, electrical equipment and flammable gas. Limited ability for fire causes by kitchen fires involving commercial cooking oils and deep-fat fryers
- Special Dry Powder (Dark Blue Stripe): Used only for fire causes by metals like lithium, aluminium, magnesium and sodium.
It is important to have the right types of fire extinguishers for your premise. Besides that, there is an expiry date for every fire extinguisher. Remember to constantly perform checking & maintenance to ensure that they are usable at all times.
Maintaining the Equipment
Having all the fire safety equipment in the building with no maintenance is similar to not having the equipment at all. Lack of maintenance may cause the equipment to not work properly in case of an emergency.
Common equipment checks include:
- Fire Doors: Fire doors must be able to operate correctly and can be shut without obstruction on a daily basis.
- Fire alarm testing: To test run the fire alarm to ensure that it is working properly at all times.
- Test all equipment: Any fire safety equipment such as fire extinguisher, fire blankets or sprinkler systems should also be tested and maintained accordingly.
